If concrete starts setting before placement, it is a serious quality issue. Your response must prioritize structural integrity over speed.

Immediate Actions on Site 1. Stop the Pour Immediately
  • Do not place partially set concrete

  • Prevent compromised concrete from entering the structure

2. Assess the Degree of Setting
  • Check:

    • Loss of workability

    • Stiffness / false set vs initial set

  • Perform slump test if possible

3. Do NOT Add Water
  • Re-tempering is not allowed

  • Adding water reduces strength and durability

4. Reject the Concrete (If Initial Setting Has Begun)
  • If concrete has started initial setting:

    • Reject the batch

    • Return to plant or dispose as per procedure

5. Inform Senior Engineer & Batching Plant
  • Report:

    • Delay in transport

    • Traffic or breakdown

    • High ambient temperature

  • Document the rejection

If Work Cannot Be Fully Stopped (Rare & Controlled Case)

(Only with written approval)

  • Use approved retarding admixture

  • Only if:

    • Concrete is still within allowable setting time

    • Engineer-in-charge approves

Preventive Measures for Future
  • Plan pour during cooler hours

  • Minimize transit time

  • Use retarders in hot weather

  • Ensure continuous supply and manpower readiness

One-Line Interview Answer (Perfect)

If concrete has started setting before pouring, I stop the work, do not add water, assess the condition, reject the concrete if initial setting has begun, and inform the senior engineer and batching plant.
