(High-frequency site & interview question)
A site engineer is responsible for preventing collapse, falls, and injuries. Below are clear, practical precautions expected in interviews and on site.
1. Safety Precautions During Excavation Major Risks:Cave-in / collapse
Falling into excavation
Hitting underground utilities
Barricade excavation area with warning signs
Provide proper side slopes / shoring / sheet piling
Keep excavated soil at least 1 m away from edge
Dewatering if water table is high
Safe access using ladders or ramps
Check for underground utilities before excavation
Do not allow workers inside during heavy rain
Continuous supervision for deep excavations (>1.5 m)
Fall from height
Scaffold collapse
Use sound materials and proper couplers
Scaffolding erected by trained personnel
Ensure:
Firm base & sole plates
Proper bracing and tying to structure
Provide guardrails, mid-rails, and toe boards
Planks properly supported, no gaps
Do not overload scaffold
Mandatory PPE: helmet, safety belt/harness
Inspect scaffold daily and after rain
Fall from slab edges
Electrical shock from vibrators
Injury from moving equipment
Provide edge protection and safety nets
Proper access using ladders or platforms
Electrical vibrators with:
Proper earthing
Insulated cables
Avoid concrete free fall >1.5 m
Workers to wear:
Helmet
Gloves
Gum boots
Adequate lighting for night concreting
Barricade area below slab during concreting
Activity Main Risk Key Precaution
| Excavation | Collapse | Shoring & barricading |
| Scaffolding | Fall | Guardrails & bracing |
| Concreting | Fall / electric shock | Edge protection & safe equipment |
During excavation, scaffolding, and concreting, I ensure barricading, proper support systems, safe access, PPE use, equipment safety, and continuous supervision to prevent collapse, falls, and injuries.
