Step-by-Step Action on Site 1. Stop Further Work Immediately
  • Do not allow shuttering or concreting

  • Prevent the error from becoming permanent

2. Identify the Nature of Misplacement

Check:

  • Column position off grid

  • Wrong column size

  • Incorrect number or diameter of bars

  • Inadequate cover

  • Wrong lap or anchorage

  • Stirrups spacing incorrect

Not all misplacements have the same severity.

3. Measure & Compare with Drawings
  • Measure actual position using tape / total station

  • Compare with latest structural drawing

  • Record deviation in mm

4. Assess Tolerance
  • Minor deviation (within permissible tolerance)
→ may be acceptable with approval

  • Major deviation
    must be rectified

(Never decide alone—structural approval is mandatory.)

5. Inform Senior Engineer / Consultant
  • Explain:

    • Type of error

    • Extent of deviation

    • Stage of work

  • Submit photos and measurements

6. Rectification (Only as Approved)

Possible actions:

  • Shift reinforcement cage to correct position

  • Refix bars and ties

  • Increase cover using spacers

  • Add additional bars (only if approved)

  • Partial dismantling and re-fixing

⚠️ Never cut, bend, or add bars without written approval.

7. Re-Inspection & Documentation
  • Get corrected reinforcement re-checked

  • Obtain approval before concreting

  • Record in site register / inspection checklist

What You Should NEVER Do
  • Never adjust “by eye”

  • Never proceed to concrete thinking “it’s small”

  • Never hide the mistake

One-Line Interview Answer (Perfect)

If column reinforcement is misplaced, I stop the work, measure and compare with drawings, assess tolerance, inform the senior/consultant, rectify only as approved, and proceed with concreting only after re-inspection.
